Egypt, officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country. The country is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Palestine and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan and the Sahara to the south, and Libya to the west. Cairo, the capital and largest city, is a leading cultural center, while Alexandria is the second-largest city and an important hub of industry and tourism. The Egyptian pound is the official currency of Egypt, and the country is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, and the Arab League.
